ABOUT BLACK POTTERY

Black Clay Pottery is primarily manufactured in Nizamabad in the Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. It is a unique kind of pottery that is famous for its dark glossy surface engraved with silver patterns which are inspired by the medieval Bidriware of Karnataka. This pottery is made with locally available fine-textured clay. It is an extensive process involving multiple steps of baking and polishing with mustard oil. The patterns engraved using sharp twigs on these pots are usually floral or geometrical. These grooves are then filled with silvery powdered zinc and mercury. The shiny black surface is obtained by enclosing the pots in kilns that are smoke-fired with rice husks.
